Lifetime Dairy Farmer and Rotational Grazing Advocate
Founder of Shade Haven and Rotochopper
"People that buy the Shade Haven say what's the best thing I can do for my land, for my farm, for my animals, for my neighborhood."
Vince talks about rotational grazing and creating a product to provide mobile shade for cows.
Vince Hundt has been farming near Viroqua, Wisconsin, for decades. He uses rotational grazing, an increasingly popular alternative to much more environmentally damaging agriculture practices. Rotational grazing is the practice of moving grazing livestock between pastures on a regular basis so that only a portion of pasture is grazed at a time while the remainder of the pasture rests. The practice drastically increases carbon sequestration, building the soil while also increasing the carrying capacity of the land. He also created a product called the Shade Haven, a mobile shade structure for livestock.
"For better or worse, we've evolved over many eons out of the forest, out of the prairie, out of the land. To completely separate ourselves from that, you would think would have some important psychological and social consequences."
Vince talks about the environmental, social, and health costs of industrial farming.
"These grasses have had a chance to really build the soil. All of the synthesized carbon goes down into the ground and feeds the soil life which stores this excess energy creating a real beautiful heavy sod which now is packing in the nutrients and is capable of holding much more water, doubling the carrying capacity of the pasture while eliminating all erosion and water pollution."
Vince highlights the benefits of rotational grazing.
